Stableford Format Explanation

The JustGolf tournament scheduled for July 8 at Blue Heron will use the regular Stableford format. A Stableford is a stroke-play competition in which the high total wins, not the low. That's because in Stableford, your final score is not your stroke total, but rather the total points you have earned for your scores on each individual hole.

This is a two-man or two-woman team tournament in which both players’ Stableford points will be added together; it is not a better-ball tournament. Even though both balls count, your partner will not drag down the team score with a bad hole, because there are no negative points.

The JustGolf Stableford tournament is a net tournament and awards points as follows:

• Net double bogey or worse: 0
• Net bogey: 1 point
• Net par: 2 points
• Net birdie: 3 points
• Net eagle: 4 points
• Net double eagle (albatross): 5 points

There are no negative points. Male players will be instructed to pick up their ball on any hole where their gross score will be 3 over par or worse (double bogey max). Female players will pick up at 3 over par on holes where they receive one handicap stroke, and at 4 over par where they receive two strokes (double -occasional triple- bogey max).

Players will receive 100% of their Course Handicap. The maximum Course Handicap is 18 for men, 24 for women.

You may be familiar with the Modified Stableford used by the pros. The Modified Stableford gives the pros higher points for birdies and eagles, and severely penalizes poor scores with negative points. Typical amateur golfers are not going to be scoring numerous birdies and eagles. It is also discouraging for amateurs to lose points on a bad hole. The Stableford  we are playing, with no negative points, is the recommended format for an amateur group.

Tournament rules, course information, and pairings will be posted later this week.

Vineyards Team Handicaps

Calculation of Ryder Cup Handicaps

• Handicap Index: June 15 revision
• Course Handicap: Men’s slope-120; Men’s forward slope-116; Women’s slope-69.2 120. Additional 2 strokes deducted for men playing from the forward tees (68.9-67.6=1.3 rounded to 1). Maximum CH: Men-18; Women-24
• CH Adjustment: Reduction based on points accumulated in prior tournaments for first, second, and third place net finishes (see the Handicap Adjustment Chart on the JustGolf website: http://justgolftournaments.blogspot.com)
• Tournament CH: Course Handicap minus CH Adjustment
A Ryder Cup has three formats, each of which is handicapped differently. After the handicap is calculated for each format, it is divided by 3 (each 6-hole format represents one-third of the competition).
• Scramble: 40% of lower handicap plus 25% of higher handicap, divided by 3
• Selected drive/alternate shot: 60% of lower handicap plus 40% of higher handicap, divided by 3
• Better ball: 90% for men; 95% for women (dotted on cards)
Green fill indicates men playing from the forward tees

Vineyards Rules and Course Information

Please print and bring to the tournament.

Tees:
Men playing the standard tees (White) will move up to the Green tees on the following holes: 1, 3, 7, 13, 14, 18. This will be marked on your card. If you tee off from the White tees on those holes, that ball is in play. You may not hit a second drive from the Green tees.

Format:
• Better ball, holes #1-6. Each competitor plays his own ball. Record both scores unless you pick up because you are out of a hole (strongly recommended). Play the ball down. Free relief from aeration holes on fairway on holes #1 and 2 (lift and place next to hole). Free relief from GUR on fairways (any large area with no grass – drop within one club-length of the NPR no closer to the hole) and divot holes (drop as close as possible to divot, no closer to the hole).
• Scramble, holes #7-12. Both players tee off. Select the shot you want to play, and both players hit from that spot. Continue in this manner until the ball is holed. Once the ball is holed your score is official, so be sure to mark your ball on the green if your partner has not yet putted.
After you decide which shot you will play, mark the spot with a tee or ball marker. Each player must place the ball within one foot of that tee no closer to the hole and play his next shot. YOU MAY NOT USE THE ONE FOOT TO IMPROVE YOUR LIE (stay in the rough, in a bunker, behind a tree, OB, on the apron of the green, etc.).
• Selected drive–alternate shot, holes #13-18. Both partners tee off. Select which drive you will play, and alternate hitting that ball to the hole. If you select A’s drive, then B will hit the next shot, A will hit the third shot, etc. Note: You MAY NOT switch balls to play your own preferred brand, including for putting. Play the ball down.
Disqualification: If you play the wrong format on any hole the team will be disqualified. The format for each six holes is noted on your scorecard. Signs on the seventh and thirteenth holes will remind you of the format.
Time of starting: If your partner is late, you must start without him at your assigned tee time. Since the first six holes are a better ball, and the next six are a scramble, your partner may join you as late as the start of Hole #13. If you have begun play of a hole, your partner will begin play at the start of the next hole.

Course Information:
• Out of Bounds: Marked by white stakes and boundary fence posts.
• Do not enter the vineyards or other environmentally protected areas.
• Environmentally sensitive areas: Red stakes with white tops indicate environmentally sensitive areas where entry is not permitted. A ball coming to rest in these areas may not be searched for and must be abandoned. Relief options are the same as for a lateral water hazard.
• Dirt cart paths: There is no free relief from dirt cart paths.
• Drop areas: You may NOT use the drop areas on holes #3 and #13.
• Bathrooms: Portables near holes 3, 6, 14, 15, and behind halfway house.
• Hole location: chart on cart.
• Yardage markers (to center of green): sprinkler heads; red, white, and blue disks (100, 150, 200).
• Carts: drive onto fairways, remain on fairways, exit fairways at signs. Do not drive or park in rough.
• Repair divots with divot mix on cart. Rake bunkers.
• Best advice: Greens are quick – stay below the hole.
• Practice putting green; no driving range.

Specific hole information:
Distances are in order from White/Green/Red
#1: To bunker in fairway: 217/146/116. To carry bunker: 239/168/139.
#2: To bunker on right: 187/170/137. Distance to water: 264/247/213. High grass surrounding bunker) ends 30 yards from the green.

Vineyards Ryder Cup Pairings

Important correction:
The tournament at the Vineyards is a Ryder Cup, not a Stableford. Sorry for the confusion. The Stableford is at Blue Heron. I will re-post the Stableford description closer to the Blue Heron date.  An explanation of the Ryder Cup format is included in the Rules and Course Information for the Vineyards tournament, which you will receive tomorrow.

JustGolf Update

Our next tournament is the Stableford at Blue Heron Pines on July 8. I will post the application tomorrow. Hard copies of the application will be available at the Vineyards.

I will visit the Vineyards on Wednesday to review the course prior to the JustGolf Ryder Cup next Tuesday. Keep an eye out for the pairings, course information, tournament rules, and team handicap chart, all of which will post in the days following my round.

The long-range forecast for June 17 at the Vineyards is partly cloudy with a high of 81, which means that the 60 players signed up for the Ryder Cup may only have to take one trip to the Vineyards this year! (For those of you new to JustGolf, last year’s tournament was rescheduled twice due to violent thunderstorms that made the course unplayable.)

Looking forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday.

Linda
